BI Cody is an artist in the making, born on the island of Sardinia, Italy in 1968. She lives and works in New York where she has resided for the past 16 years. BI Cody studied Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London. Despite her long career as a commercial designer and creative director she’s never stopped cultivating her curiosity and desire to express herself as an artist. The opportunity to finally dedicate herself to experiment came as the Covid pandemic wreaked it’s havoc on the world. The world closing the doors on itself meant having back the most precious thing an artist, and any individual, can have to reflect and engage in personal meaningful activities: TIME. Time for the first time. Time to discover, time to travel, time to reflect, time to play, time to experiment, time to connect, time to disconnect, time to cut ties, time to question, time to clean up, time to appraise, time to grieve, time to express, time to reach out. Especially, time to create. Welcome to the journey.

This is a presentation website. As my practice is just beginning I will be defining and refining it as I go. Check it out, connect, send me messages, I need encouragement, support, and guidance. The world is changing as we speak, and so is the way we relate to it through the medium of Art.

A few notes on a beginning.

At the onset of the pandemic I took some time to travel through Italy. I was in Rome visiting some of the hundreds of churches and basilicas in complete awe at the richness of the experience. The sounds of those bells echo throughout Italy. It is natural to pay visit to those iconic houses of faith.

I was raised as a Catholic in a culture where the religion shapes the national culture and traditional family rituals in a very defining way. Because of my career path, and travels, I had the opportunity to put a respectful distance bewteen myself and the indoctrination. I don’t describe myself as Catholic or identify with other religious faiths, but none the less I hold dear a certain sprit of the sacred. I am intensely fascinated by the way different faiths have cultivated and developed what I can only describe as brilliant branding experiences.

Naturally I am the most familiar with Roman Catholic churches. Especially for the institutions with hundred of years of history and a lot of financial backing, you are completely immersed in a curated environment. Your senses are assailed by the powerful art and elements; architecture, sculptures covering every surface of the establishment, the candles, the perfume of flowers and incense, the muffled sounds of whispers and light steps, the sun rays filtering through windows and stained glasse, the long shadows cast by the architectural details; there is a sacred aura which forces a subconscious reverence. A designer by profession, I am lead to pay attention to details and I begun to examine environment-layered design. I started seeing the repetitions of models and conventions interpreted through the visions of hundreds of talented artists and craftsmen. I shot countless images and at some point I felt I could use some of the tools to express something more personal. There and then I had this idea of using some of the marbled pavement and wall layouts, and structures to create another other kind of visual experience.
